London is growing – a period of massive urban renewal has seen our city grow to a record high of 9.5 million Londoners in 2022 – and it shows no sign of slowing down into 2023.
With 14% of all Brits living in the city, we’re going to need more ways of getting around and an unofficial tube map, created by designer Ali Carr, shows what plans transport chiefs have planned in the long term. It shows how the Underground is likely to evolve dramatically over the coming years, and includes the two major Crossrail developments.
In southeast London, the Bakerloo line will extend to Lewisham, Beckenham Junction and Hayes; meanwhile, the new Elizabeth Line will extend past Abbey Wood as far as Dartford and Gravesend.
In northeast London, Crossrail 2 will forge new connections between Dalston, Seven Sisters and Alexandra Palace and head as far north as Broxbourne, while the crisscross of London Overground services will continue to grow.
Meanwhile, in Central London, the tube map is becoming slightly confusing. Euston Square, Euston, Kings Cross and St. Pancras merge into an enormous transit hub in this diagram, even they’re almost a kilometre apart.
The impressive map is the brainchild of Alastair Carr, 21, an economics masters student at Cambridge University. He said the design was based on Sadiq Khan’s draft transport plan for the capital.
What does this mean for the housing market?
Well, with more accessibility and ease of movement, house prices with future stations nearby are likely to rise in value, and for those looking for a long-term home, now might be the best time to move – whether that’s to a bigger property or to a new area for the first time.
Areas that are currently sparse with not much currently going on may see a regeneration as commuters flock to them, taken in by better access to the city centre.
As demand grows, new amenities and events will pop up, and transform those spots, growing the number of places tourists will be excited to visit in London, and therefore growing London itself into a bigger city, with the most exciting activities not just happening in the centre, but on or outside the borders.
One thing’s for sure, London is constantly growing and transforming, and we’re excited to help those looking to move within the area get to where they want to go. London’s future is looking more fast-paced than ever, and with the new additions to its travel, it will continue to rival other capitals as the best city in the world.
